 Gertie Davis is remembered as the beloved daughter of Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and political activist, and Nelson Davis, a military veteran. After their marriage on March 18, 1869, her parents embraced her in 1874.

During and after the American Civil War, her mother, Harriet Tubman, was known as a strong, caring, and political dissident. She also believed in women's democratic rights. She was the keynote speaker at the inaugural conference of the National Federation of Afro-American Women.

Gertie Davis was Harriet Tubman and Nelson Davis's main little girl. Her mother married John Tubman, a dark free man who was still oppressed. After she married, she changed her name from Araminta Ross to Harriet Tubman. Tubman began trying to free herself from slavery after changing her name. Tubman fell head over heels with Nelson Charles Davis after numerous long periods of running and supporting various slaves in their runs.

On March 18, 1869, Harriet got hitched to Civil War soldier Nelson Davis. She was staying in Auburn when they met.
