Marvin's father's treatment of him deteriorated as he grew older, and he was no longer able to deal with it, so he moved out and dropped out of school.


Marvin wanted to be a pilot and joined the US Air Force when he was seventeen. Regardless, after being given only minor missions to complete, he became dissatisfied and pretended to be ill in order to be fired. He formed the four-piece vocal group The Marquees with the help of a friend, Reese Palmer. The band's name was changed to 'Harvey,' and they began performing music.



Awards and Nominations 


He won two Grammy Awards in 1983 for 'Sexual Healing,' one for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and another for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. Gaye won an American Music Award for the melody of the song in the R&B-soul category. For his inventive and tasteful contributions to the musical world, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996.
